Koontz got your eye?

And another one down

Amazon is my favorite place to shop. Yes I live in St. Charles county, but Wal-mart really isn’t where I spend all the big bucks. As you might have guessed that’s where I purchase all my books.

Purchasing leads to recommendations, and recommendations pointed to Dean Koontz. So I picked up the first Odd Thomas novel. I was immediately hooked. So far I’ve read the first three.

Koontz purchases on Amazon of course led to more of his works turning up for me to buy. Oh, the titles are interesting, but they don’t really say much about the books. Let’s list a few…

	Seize the Night
	The Watchers
	Life Expectancy
	Intensity
	Phantoms

You get the drift. Short titles and cool covers. That’s what it’s all about I guess. What I’d really like though is my friends and contacts to make some recommendations about his books. Or heck, just suggest some good alternates.

Ones I’ve read already:

Odd Thomas 1st-3rd books
Frankenstein books – Prodigal Son and City of Night

That’s it. Just those. I’ve been wary of running out and spending $10 on something I might hate. Are the Odd Thomas novels a good indication of the rest of his writing? Are they exceptions?

So I’m asking you, my readers, and the rest of you out there on the net; what’s your favorite Koontz tale or alternate work of fiction.

I’ll post the results here on the blog, so keep the suggestions coming in. As an added incentive, I’ll buy you a book too if I take your suggestion. So be the first to suggest your favorite.

Yours,
Todd

  • Closing comments to make decision. Thanks for all of the great suggestions.
  • I have to tell you that my PERSONAL all time Koontz favorite is Strangers. Twilight Eyes is a close second. Then the Chris Snow books, Fear Nothing & Seize The Night. But I love 'em all. I'm eagerly anticipating Odd Hours. :)
  • Thank you akaMonty. Strangers and Twilight Eyes are in the top running, as well as Fear Nothing and Seize the Night. I'm leaning towards those at this writing as they are a pair of books.

What I'll do is draw names for the folks that recommended the same book as I chose. Set someone up with a $10 gift certificate on Amazon.

    Thanks again everyone.
  • Life Expectancy is a little bit different, but I think if you enjoyed the Odd series, you'll enjoy that one. It's got a little twist to his typical style, but Koontz nonetheless.
  • Phil,
Thanks for the recommendation. Life Expectancy is not one I'd heard recommended before. I'm going to read the bits on Amazon as well.

Please do send your fellow Koontz fans along.
  • Then Koontz is a good choice. I don't remember what I have read by him off the top of my head. I'll give it some thought and let you know. I think one was Dragon Tears
  • I am a huge Stephen King fan. Have you read much of his work? I like Koontz too, but SK is The Man!
  • I've read lots of Stephen King in my time. Read some of his earliest work and some of his more recent stuff as well. Almost always a good time there.
I'm looking to explore some other authors in that genre.
  • First off... Seize the Night is a sequel. The first book featuring the character is Fear Nothing.

Phantoms and Intensity are good books.

The Watchers is considered one of his best. I've read most of his stuff, and one of the best suggestions I can give is to head to the book store, grab any one of his books and read the first page.

Most of the time that was all it took for me to march to the front of the store and buy it, while reading it on the way to the car.
  • Tony,
i do appreciate the Seize the Night heads up. I'd heard a few folks recommend it.

I like books with continuing characters, so I might pick up Fear Nothing.

It's weird that I never followed his work until recently. What got me hooked was the Frankenstein books though.
  • When I was a teenager, I read everything Koontz I could get my hands on. Some of it was downright bizarre, but it was all pretty good. My faves: The Bad Place, Cold Fire, The Watchers, Lightning, Odd Thomas (and the first one is better than the second, but I haven't read the third yet, and the 4th comes out soon, I noticed). I would venture to say that what's in the Odd Thomas books is a good indication of the rest of them. I've read most of his early stuff, all the way through Dragon Tears. I think Intensity is a pretty good book, and I read most of it, but then misplaced my copy and forgot about replacing it. I did see the made-for-tv movie on it, so I know how the story ends. Usually the writing is better than the story.

Phantoms is alright, a little spooky, and I also liked one called Night Fall and there was one about goblins that was pretty good. The Servants of Twilight, that's the name of it. Anyway, if you have any questions about a specific title, shoot me an email.
  • I mean "usually the writing in the book is better than the TV story."

    Duh.
