So he’s elected already, but can we change?

Barack Obama is now President Elect.  From sea to shining sea and beyond, folks are cheering for him and for the change the anticipate coming soon.  There are people in foreign countries heralding his ascendency to President as possibly the best thing to happen to the US and foreign relations in a long time.

President Elect Obama though is just one man.  He’s one man taking the helm of a country with many issues and challenges to tackle.  Many of those issues are longstanding and much larger than a mere decision can fix.  Most of these problems aren’t just within the government but outside of it as well.

This man is going to need more than a well picked staff of advisors to get things on course and to even avoid any major pitfalls.  He’s going to need more than a few hundred men and women with agendas. President Obama will need you and me.

The work of steering a country isn’t the work of one man or woman, it’s not the work of the government, it’s the work of a nation.  Our nation.

How can we most effectively get started?  We must unite.  It’s been a long haul and people on both political sides are still wired up.  People on all sides of many issues are riled up as well. There’s gay/straight, black/white, immigration/illegal immigration, and more.

I call on you to put down your pointy objects and attitudes and seek ways to move forward.  Let’s stop spending our energy complaining about who’s President, if his latest plan is going to work, or whether the war in Iraq should be over.  Let’s focus on things we personally can influence.

This sort of work may require us to stand in lines to vote or it may require us to stand in lines of protest.  At times though, and most often, it’s going to require us to take actions to raise up and support our nation and our fellow citizens.  It’s going to be about pitching in and putting our money and time where our mouths have been.

Want to see something done about hunger? Then start by doing something yourself.  Rouse your friends and neighbors to help.

Want those kids in Timbuktoo to have clothes?  Then start sending them some.  Get your church or whatever organization together and collect some to get over there.  Don’t take no for an answer.

Your local homeless population growing?  Have you done something to help? Have you built a house? Donated materials? Fed them?

If you believe in a god, are you down on your knees praying for this country? For Obama? For our government? If not, then it’s about time.

Totally broke your own self? Can barely find time to pray? How about a picture or sign then or just tell someone every day.  Share your fears, concerns and ideas.  Make sure to get the word out when a solution idea pops up.  Share the excitement of change to be.

All I’m saying is quit complaining and procrastinating and do something.  Make that change happen instead of focusing on others making it happen.

Challenge me as well!  Keep me honest. If I want you to do something, then I expect myself to do the same.  Visit me here or on Twitter or email me even. But expect I’ll be doing the same to you. Beware.

It’s OUR country. Let’s make it better.
