Welcome to a new series on Social Networking Tips. The plan is to bring in folks to share their best ideas about social networking. The next person to write up a tip could be you!
Tip:
Contact.
In a previous post I spoke about listening and social networking, how it’s vital. Sometimes though, it’s time to reach out.
Connie Reece share her thoughts on this:
Twitter and Facebook status updates and notes move so fast that it’s difficult to keep up with what friends/followers are doing. Periodically scan your list and look for people you haven’t interacted with in a while. Send them a Facebook message or write on their Wall to say hello. Give them a shoutout on Twitter or send a DM to let them know you are thinking about them
I can’t tell you how many folks I follow that I lose track of. It’s not that their tweets or posts get dropped or lost, it’s that they are seldom enough we miss each other. It’s not dramatic but it happens.
Tweetdeck provides a great way to manage this for Twitter. How I’ve implemented this is to create a column for my peers and influencers. These are folks I don’t want to miss even if they don’t post often. As long as Tweetdeck is open, I can scroll back as far as I’d like. Another feature is the search columns. Simply create a search on someone’s ID and you have an instant history of their tweets.
Facebook provides a similar feature, Friend List Feeds. These are customizable friend lists. Create one, add friends and you have an instant update stream or feed of just those friends.
I’ve created feeds for my Twitter and SOBCon buddies. Also, I’ve got a local list for folks in the greater St. Louis area.
The point of this isn’t just for you to listen in, but for you to get involved. This is your window on those folks’ online lives. It will be the way you can talk with them about they are talking about, the topics on their minds.
This is a real value add. Your contacts don’t want to always chat about the weather or politics. Or perhaps they do. This will be the quick way for you to find out and be able to jump right in.
If you were to take a look through my recent posts and tweets, you’d see I’ve been struggling with medical issues, the Geek Squad and organizing get-together events.
What are your friends talking about?
Yours,
Todd – @tojosan on Twitter

My recent thought on connecting with certain people on Twitter is to expand on the #followfriday theme to apply to every day of the week. Each day I'm engaging on Twitter, there always seem to be three or four people that made the day extra special. At the end of my stream, I try to post a "thank you" to these folks for making my day. It makes me feel good and hopefully, they get some good vibes too.
