Blogger Product Reviews – Death Knell?

1 Good Reason, The Internet Marketing blog, has an interesting article on the possible death of blogger product reviews due to legislation.

Here’s an excerpt,

“The Federal Trade Commission is considering new regulations that will hold companies responsible for the actions of bloggers who make false statements about their products, when the blogger has been compensated by the company.  So if a company gives a blogger a tube of skin cream and the blogger falsely claims in their blog that the skin cream cures cancer the FTC can sue the blogger and the company.”

Sounds like powerful negative incentive for both bloggers and companies.  The article goes on to paint this as most pressing for bloggers and small businesses.  Potential law suits hanging over their heads will lead to more caution or outright stopping of sending samples off to bloggers, or businesses accepting reviews without legal approval.

My bigger concern is why this would be happening.  There have been product reviews in print and online magazines for many years.  Isn’t there legislation in place covering that already?

As a blogger that hasn’t taken any products on a sample/review situation, maybe I’m not seeing all sides here either.  I’d welcome other’s thoughts on this. Pro or con.

What’s your opinion?
