Internet Famous – Twitterlebrity

Into a 3D world...

Hi, I’m Internet famous. Okay, maybe Twitter famous. Um, well, at least someone recognizes by my avatar. No kidding. Really. It happened twice this week. Stop laughing.

I got my first taste of being a celebrity this week and I actually found it embarrassing. Not seeing yourself as anything but just another participant in the whole web2.0 thing makes it odd to be recognized, let alone pointed out.

This past Wednesday the Go-Giver Tour stopped in St. Louis. There was a tweetup at Roxanne’s. Of course you know I came out for that. Lots of attendees.

Until a fair amount of folks showed up, I didn’t recognize anyones face, though a couple of names I knew. Shortly a few folks I’ve met before rolled in. We said our hellos and I went on with my chatter.

It didn’t stay that quiet though. One of the folks that I follow showed up and bam, the gig was up. This person started pointing me out, introducing me, and raving about my social networking antics. I hope I didn’t blush bright enough to change the glow in the room. They meant well, but man was I taken aback.

Not half an hour later I had a repeat scene when another person had to introduce me to a cohort. The embarrassment of compliments took my tongue.

Recovered from that, I was taking a computer free break today at the mall. Specifically I was at the bookstore. Just as I got settled at the cafe in Borders, I heard the words, “hey, I know you.”

We exchanged pleasantries, and she told me to check my tweets. Sure enough, there was a brand new one. The lady was @RobynsWorld. Talk about a small world.

Honestly I was surprised, amused, proud, wowed, and embarrassed all at the same time. I of course asked how she knew it was me. Her answer was my avatar.

That’s scary in some respects. I honesty didn’t expect to see anyone I knew. So few of my Twitter friends are from my neck of the woods, especially if you consider the percent of them that are.

What’s even more thought provoking on my part, to have her son say that his parents talk about me all the time. Woah. I’m big time if people I’ve never met in person are talking about me. Off line even. And their kid.

Oprah watch out; I’m celebrity coming through.

How has it been for you? Have you been called to out of a room of people yet? Are there folks following you around? Interrupting your haircut? Bothering you at lunch?

You could be next. Fair warning too; I carry a camera and I’m not afraid to take your picture.

  • I want to be a Twitterlebrity. My life needs some pizazz...hmm...then again, maybe that's why I'm NOT a Twitterlebrity... *pout*
  • It was an odd thing on my end also meeting you. I knew I recognized you, but I also realized you would be clueless as to who I was since I don't use a headshot for my avatar. You will be forever know as my for twitterlebrity sighting!
  • Robyn,

It was my pleasure to run into you two. It's fun to have a bit of celebrity about me, but it's also startling at times.

Can't wait to run into you all again.
  • I've had that happen in Flickr fame. It is a strange feeling because, as you said, you are just doing your thing. I even had a friend of my daughter's, who lives out your way, came to NY to stay with Chels, and realized that she was my daughter. We have a mutual contact in Flickr, one of my oldest contacts and knew of me through that. My daughter was weirded out. :)
  • I've often wondered how many folks would recognize me from Flickr. It'd be funny to have that happen. What is good though is to have folks I do plan to meet know who I am instantly from all of the pictures I share. They also already recognize my wife. :)
  • Some day Todd... Some day. :)
