New to the Net – What to bookmark

What I do to wake up in the mornings

Soon this will be my mother; her face will be glowing to the light of a computer screen.  She’ll be the one checking emails at 5:30 AM and just before bed. Perhaps mom will become addicted to online shopping and I’ll visit to find her house full of Zappos shoes.

Whatever happens, I want to steer mom in the right direction with her first computer and first real time alone on the Internet. Firefox will be the default browser of course, but what should I load it up with. What bookmarks should I start her off with?

I’m asking you, my friends, family and few readers – What bookmarks to start off mom with.

As incentive to answer, each person who leaves a unique bookmark site in a comment and in such a way that I can find your email, will receive a copy of my Sunday Guide to Social Networking e-book in PDF format.

Thanks and give me your best.

The obvious first bookmark you should give her is Google Reader with your blog in as the first feed. :)

My second suggestion is a tool, not a bookmark: Set her up with Jing (from TechSmith). Download it from http://www.jingproject.com/ It will let her tell you what's wrong with the computer when she has problems. It's free. It comes with its own online storage space on ScreenCast.com. And, it just works!
  • She'll get a kick out of those.
Cakewrecks and the Walmart one are hilarious.
There are a few frugal type sites she'll love as well. Thanks for mentioning that one.
  • Bookmark her favorite TV news station (e.g. KSDK.com, KMOV.com, MSNBC.com) so she can have access to the news at her fingertips.

Not sure if she wants to do online banking, but if so, bookmark her bank for easy access. Other things to bookmark are sites with information on her hobbies- e.g. online book clubs if she's an avid reader, tips on gardening if she likes to garden, or tips on sewing, etc.

Just ask her what she's interested in surfing because as we know, there is a ton of information out there. Once she gets the hang of it after a couple of days, weeks, or months, she'll have things bookmarked you never thought of. :)

Heck, I wish my mother would get on the information super hwy so she can do her on online research. Instead she calls me up to look up something online.
  • Great news sites. She'll love those.
You're so right though; once she's adept, she'll be cruising on her own.
For her husband maybe Syfy website.
I wonder too, since they are both avid readers, if they'd like Goodreads.com.
  • If she likes to cook AllRecipes.com is a great resource
    Local newspaper STLtoday.com
Good weather resource http://www.weather.gov/ (put in her zip code and bookmark that specific link though)
  • Those are some winning sites. She'll love allrecipes.com if she can figure out the search features.
