Citrix on Apple iPad Wins

Citrix for the Apple iPad snapshot showing Client Access session

Citrix for the Apple iPad is a winner by Tojosan, on Flickr

Downloading apps for the Apple iPad can be fun. Hidden amongst all those games, photo editors, and note pads is the occasional must have app.

Citrix is a must have iPad app.

A little background. Citrix for the iPad is a Citrix client. Citrix servers provide access to PC applications over the web. Citrix clients are required though to complete the connection. The client opens up in a window and act as if you signed into the network, including drive mappings.

Citrix provides the iPad client for free and it just works.

Taking just minutes to set up, I was soon checking my email, logging onto the AS/400, and checking on jobs. Apple’s popup virtual keyboard works well here  The client provides for function keys, something the Mac Citrix client doesn’t do.

Within the client window, the app window is movable.  This allows positioning relative to the keyboard. Function keys are above the keyboard area.

Citrx for iPad replaces work laptop.

Adding the Citrix client iPad app frees me from taking my work laptop anywhere but work. No more lugging the extra PC along when traveling.

Clean and smooth, responsive, with high resolution makes this a best of show app.  If your employer supports Citrix, I highly recommend installing this today.

What about you?

What iPad app is on your must have list?

VNC is a great option when you're either on your local network (i.e. you're upstairs and want to connect to the computer in the basement) or if you've taken additional steps to secure the connection (such as using a VPN connection or tunneling through SSH) What I'm really trying to say is that while VNC is a great tool, it's not necessarily the best option for everyone. Depending on what exactly you're trying to accomplish there are several alternatives that may suite your needs better. Do you really need to be able to remote control your pc while you're away? Or do you just need access to certain documents and folders? If it's the latter then you may be better served looking at something like Dropbox which will allow you to synchronize files across computers (and there's also a great iPad/iPhone app as well)Also, take a look at LogMeIn Ignition (and LogMeIn in general) which provides a secure method of connecting to your pc remotely.LogMeIn Ignition: https://secure.logmein.com/welcome/iphone/?wt.a...

Any suggestions for the VNC server to use? Again, security is my biggest concern with these. Would like to be able to connect to my desktop PC with laptop PC or iPhone while away from home office.

See my other reply on VNC clients.VNC Viewer is cheap and works well based on my coworker's review.

SSH and VNC in one package sounds great.Read an article on iTeleport</a which made it sound like a solid product as well.Coworker is using VNC Viewer and is pleased with it.

Take a look at iSSH by Zinger-soft http://www.zinger-soft.com/iSSH_features.html SSH, X11, and VNC all in one client. I use it primarily for the SSH client but the other features are quite handy for sysadmin type folks as well. I've been using it on the iPhone for quite a long time and the recent iPad updates make this an even better tool.
