Unsubscribe! That’s an order!

Unsubscribing seems like a big word and always scares us blog pack rats. We hate to let one go ‘just in case’ we might miss a life changing blog post. Letting go of one blog seems like tossing out that set of odd coins you’ve kept. You just never know.

Truth? I know.

Reading through your RSS subscription list I see that blog about travel, and yep, there’s that one on writing tips. Over there, there’s that blog you hope your spouse doesn’t find with the pictures. Sound about right? Oh, and you geeks, I know about the tech porn blogs.

Sweeping guesses right? How might I know? It’s a lot like my blog following list.

Those blogs are holding you hostage.

Consuming was big growing up, but now hoarding has become the norm. Adopted by my generation from our parents. While instructing us not to be greedy they secretly hoarded. They’d known loss.  That fear of loss held them hostage to things.

Our fear of missing something holds us hostage to modern media. Combined with the ease of grabbing and saving, it becomes a huge weight. That weight is what holds you hostage.

Handcuffs? Not physically, but mentally. We subscribe, we save, we feel guilt. Guilt from knowing we’re able to gather those posts and save them and yet what have we done with them? Have you really followed the ’10 Steps To A Better Pie Crust’, or how about those ’5 Ways to Create an HDR Photo’.

Chances are you have considered subscribing to this blog. (okay, humor me) You’re ready to click that button up top on the right and the you stop. You ask yourself, ‘will I read this when it hits my inbox.’ If that’s a question, then don’t click.

Don’t add my blog to the guilt load.

Urge passed? Good. Now tab on over to your reader. Find the unsubscribe button next to the feed with the largest post backlog. Click. Answer yes to the prompt. Poof. One chain gone.

Feels good doesn’t it. Trust me; it will later.  Find the blogs you’ve never read a post from or are more than 10 posts behind. Unsubscribe. Feel the weight lifting?

Don’t I want you here? I do.

Your readership is valuable to me. Valuable enough to respect your time.  I want your commitment to stop by and visit. Comments would be nice but your readership, ultimately your attention, that’s valuable. You could be somewhere else. Today you’re here with me.

Thank you.

When you’re ready, subscribe. Today though,  I want you to browse through the recent posts, find something you like, and if the mood strikes you, share it with someone.

Until later. Be well. Read lots. Lose the guilt.

feng shui of blogs?
What a cool concept.
Computers should be the tool under our thumb not us beholden to it. If eliminating blogs helps, then I'm all for it.
Cheers,
Todd

Great idea sir. Sort of like "feng shui" of blogs, right? The amount of time we spend "clearing our clutter" on the web is silly. Especially since computers (ideally, anyway) ought to make us more efficient.

I'm off to my reader right now. Thanks again! 2 bits of good advice in one day!

It's also two different mediums. I am usually inspired to comment, retweet, etc what I read. I can't do that from an email interface, so it's easier to click a button or type some words then to add another step by viewing the post on the dot-com and not in the message body.

Intriguing.

I subscribe to zero blogs by email because I don't want things cluttering my email box. I get subsequent comments by email -- and that's plenty.

Email > RSS for me as well.
I prefer to not have to go multiple places to find what I need to read.

Because, historically - and I'm sure futuristically, I do not remember to go look at a feed reader. But I love getting email - it's like my birthday every time I hear that 'pop' in Mail. I sign up once, and then it is the blog's (and feedburners) job to get in front of my face. This way, I don't have to remember to do anything, I've integrated the blogs I love into a tool that I'm connected to blood, sweat and tears (email).

Why do you subscribe to blogs by email and not rss?

Unsubscribing is the new sexy!

And hating to unsubscribe so as not to hurt feelings. I've recently done a huge purge. I had to - 300-500 emails coming in a day had no room for being polite.

Fantastic post...
