Swap feature on Words With Friends.

Swap allows the player to swap out unwanted tiles.  This in effect passes the players turn as well.

Tweetups rock. Bringing an iPad to a Tweetup really rocks. Especially if you let someone with a critical eye take a swing.

Handing the iPad around the group landed it in just such hands. Meet BB.

BB, son of @rockstarima and @aramhamper, has taken time to share his insights about the iPad here on The Broad Brush.

Q: What’s your name?
A: BB

Q: How old are you, BB?
A: Seven.

Q: And for our captive audience, can you please describe the setup you have at home?
A: An iMac on my desk, drawing supplies, i have my laptop mounted on my wall.

Q: Cool.  What programs do you like to use?
A: I like the GIMP, Firefox, iTunes, Finder, Adium, and OpenOffice.org.

Q: So, tell us what you like about the iPad?
A: I like the games.

Q: What else do you like?
A: I like how light it is, how sleek–oh, and I really like the Netflix app.  That’s my favorite.

Q: So, what don’t you like about it?
A: I think it needs to have a Flash player–oh, and it doesn’t have a USB port.  You should be able to sync your iPod to it–really it should just function like a Mac.

Q: What type of app would you most like to see?
A: I would something to make the iPad look and feel more like the iPhone.

Q: You mean like an iPhone emulator?
A:Well, you could make work like an iPhone, and make other changes to the interface.

Q: What games do you think would work best?
A: I would love to see some high-end racing games like Gran Turismo 5.  Nice graphics and use of the accelorometer.

Q: How would you integrate the iPad into your current home setup?
A: I could use it to remote into my other computers.  Plus, I’d like to surf from my bed.

Q: I noticed you had an interest in the Calendar app, can you tell us why?
A: I like it’s resemblence to a real calendar.  With a second page you really get a good idea of what you have going on.

Q: is the iPad a ‘must have’ device?
A: Yes.  If you don’t have a computer, I suggest getting one.  And if you *do* have a computer, I suggest getting one.  There’s just so much in one device.

Q: Interesting.  And what would you do for an iPad?
A: I’d trade one of my handmade iPads.

Q: Oh, that’s right.  I forgot about your handmade iPads.  Apple is a fierce competitor.  Can you tell us what makes *your* iPad superior?
A: It comes from the heart.  I draw what I see.

CookieDoodle – made for kids, cool enough for adults.

CookieDoodle guides us through designing, baking, and not least of all eating our creation. Okay, virtual nibbles, fun nonetheless.

Choosing dough starts the fun. Classic cookie recipes are plentiful or choose a photograph. Selection made a blob of dough appears on screen with a rolling pin.

Outline showing, click on the dough to make the cut. It’s then of to the oven.

An oven appears at the top center of the screen. Click it to bake your cookie.

Fresh from the oven it’s time to decorate.

Add icing, toss on some M&Ms, and you’re ready to eat!

Kids can save their favorite creations and store them in a cookie jar as well. Made a special one for mom? E-mail her the cookie fresh from the oven.

Pick your dough and get rolling!

We Rule Apple iPad Screenshot

Game playing on the iPad rocks. There I said it. Sure it’s not a game playing machine alone but why not play games on it anyway right?

We Rule is one of the most popular games available for the iPhone and iPod Touch. April 1st saw the release of a whole new version for for the Apple iPad.

Maintaining a majority of the graphics and game play worked out well. Removing screen swaps makes it a win as a rework.

Overlaying the game screen is reduced to a small popup.  Each button brings up a different window that obscures just the corner of the screen. Real estate that is mostly unpopulated by the game map.

Adding power to that little window works out especially well with viewing neighboring castles. It’s immediately obvious who is connecting on the player’s castle and village and likewise who to choose to visit.

Scrolling is smooth and natural.  Video is clean and sharp. Double tap works as before, alternately zooming in and out.

I recommend upgrading to the iPad version if you already play.

iPad Words with Friends screenshot - picking a game

(this is for my friends asking about apps they play on the iPhone/Touch)

If you love Words with Friends, you’ll love the iPad version even more. Not only is it larger, it’s bright and crisp as well.

Screen swapping is gone.  Overlayed on the board is a popup scrollable window of your current and past games. Scrolling lives on the board as well. Zoom in with a double tap, the view gets bigger and you can scroll around with your fingertip.

Notice the chat button in the upper right? Yeah, by the eyeballs!  Swapping the board is gone here as well.  Now a chat window pops up

Clean and organized exemplifies this version. Breaking the pattern though of other app developers, WWF brings a new face with their iPad version.  This means it’s a different app in the app store to download. It’s also going to cost you $4.99, again possibly.

Love pets? Love Advent? Then this article is for you.

SuperPoke! Pets doesn’t just bring holiday themed items this year.  The team brings us a free item each day during Advent.

This is one of the new messages you’ll see when you visit a friend’s restaurant. There are a variety of calls for help as well.

Here’s the leak.

So there you go, you’ve got a leak to fix. It’s a no brainer though as you simply click on any of the leak spouts in the restaurant.  A click activates a small timer over the top of the leak or other issue. Once the countdown is done, away it goes.

You’ll receive a message box like the one above.  Your friend rewards you with either 5 or 10 coins. This doesn’t replace clean up coins you earn for picking up pizza slices and discarded soda cans. It’s an additional way to get some coins.

The nicest thing about this feature? It’s redeemable in all of your friends’ restaurants.  I was able to claim over 100 coins today in this feature alone. Not a windfall but it pays for those cups of water.

My personal favorite is the penguins.

Yeah, cute little guy. Apparently he’s equally annoying to leaks, a sleeping bear, giant mushrooms, and skunks. Honestly PlayFish, picking on penguins.

This is a fun feature addition to a pleasing casual game.  PlayFish continues to add nice little features.  Upcoming are new themes as well.
