this is not COD Magazine-Hilary McHone and Rick Baker

So a few years back I run across this lady on Flickr, Brooklyn Hilary. She’s crazy, funny, and has more energy than a room of kindergartners.

She’s still crazy after all these years.  Now Hilary has indoctrinated her rather artistic husband Rick and they’ve gone COD. COD Magazine that is.

I’ve grabbed a quick snap shot of their page. Just click on the picture and go. It’ll blow your mind or make you laugh. Either way, it’s great stuff.

Hilary’s primary project these days is History with Hilary.

“Strive not to BE right, but to DO right.”

by Roy Blumenthal.

Roy’s self description:

I’m a visual facilitator, making pictures of meetings. I paint the things you say.

Roy is more than a bystander. He’s a creator.  You can tell right away he’s open and outgoing and anxious to spread ideas. You’ll love his Twitter background (see the link above).

You can see Roy’s mad creative skills on his blog, Visual Facilitation. If you just like the pictures, Roy on Flickr.

Origami Envelopes Social Networking

Origami Envelopes

Origami Envelopes by Tojosan, on Flickr

Origami envelopes, who knew right?  These were folded according to the Daisy’s Envelope diagram on pg. 81 of The Origami Bible Origami Envelopes Social Networking (affiliate link).  Shown are my first four attempts.

Crafted with A4 size paper, these were actually quite easy to pick up.  There are only six folds or so. When completed, you have a working envelope. The picture doesn’t indicate the size well.  WHen done, they are about the size of an index card.

As part of an experiment in practical origami, and social networking, I’d love to send you, yes, you whoever and wherever you may be, a letter inside one of these envelopes.

Complex? Not at all. You simple drop me a line in the comments below indicating you want a letter from me and I’ll contact you to confirm the mailing address. I’ll be taking the first 10 or so folks that jump in.  If those go well, I’ll do what I can to get to everyone that would like one of these.

So jump into the comments, make sure from the comment I can find your email (automatic for Disqus registered users) and I’ll contact you this week to get your address. No promises that the letters will be interesting.

NOTE: I’d love in the first 10 to get at least one person outside the US.

Watching Concrete SPACE Architects

SPACE Architectural Design Studio is bringing a whole new side to architecture.  An innovative website, a focus on people, and engaging the community. The last they are doing via Twitter and more.

The title, Watching Concrete, doesn’t do the video below justice.  SPACE has been sharing videos and photos of their works in progress, as well as doing interviews about their design philosophy and their people.  Please enjoy the video and then I encourage you to visit the SPACE site.

What’s your novel? National Novel Writing Month – 2009

National Novel Writing Month sticker and thank you card

National Novel Writing Month is upon us.  As in years before, thousands of would-be authors will sit at their keyboards and attempt to bang out 50,000 words or more. Yours truly will be attempting it as well.

This will be my third attempt. In years past, though I’ve had writing buddies on the nanowrimo site, I’ve not attended in live events, nor had in person writing buddies.  St. Louis though has a large community of nanowrimo authors so I decided to get some face time this year; the hope being that I’ll be more encouraged, inspired and challenged to complete fifty thousand words.

Saturday we had a kick-off party hosted by etoiline. She brought some goodies, captured our names, and set us to mingling.  This Saturday is the Halloween pre-party in St. Louis.  Party will lead into a November 1st writing kick-off.  Hopefully there’ll be room for me in there somewhere. Writing should go till about 2 AM.

Writing will be helped along throughout the month by write-ins all over the St. Louis metro area.  Planning is in the works for write-ins out St. Charles and St. Peters way.

Beyond the face time though, I’d still love to have some extra buddies along for the ride.  You’ll find me on the nanowrimo site as tojosan. Go. Click. Buddy.

What’s your novel?

4th Annual Strange Folk Festival

Strange Folks Festival Gnome Image September 2009

Strange Folk Festival describes themselves:

Strange Folk is the Heartland’s largest outdoor indie arts and crafts show. We are featuring 125 vendors from across the country along with plenty of eco-freindly craft activities, exhibits, live bands, and local cuisine under a canopy of beautiful trees! Over 10,000 folks attended last year, and Strange Folk was declared “BEST OF 2008″ in the craft show category by The Riverfront Times.

Our vendors offer merchandise with aesthetics ranging from retro, pretty, punk, urban, and everything in between. All in price ranges that make it possible for anyone to afford a one-of-a-kind handmade creation. Besides our talented artisans, we strive for a variety of food and drink options, including coffee and vegetarian fare.

There are oodles of crafty activities for children and adults. As well as live music, and free Wi-Fi access available throughout the park. O’Fallon is just 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis, and easily accessible from both sides of the Mississippi.

Your family and friends will find the food, crafts and even the crafters interesting and fun. Knowing some of them personally, I can guarantee you’ll find something you can’t resist taking home.

See you there!

Flickr Galleries

Flickr Galleries Goes Live

There’s a long list of features that we’ve wanted to develop for our members. Giving our members a way to celebrate the creativity of their fellow members has always been high on that list. Today, we’re thrilled to launch our newest feature: galleries.

Flickr galleries is a way to show off your favorite works.  The key is those works are not yours.  Your task is to be the presenter and curator of what you’ve found on Flickr.

Curator – a keeper or custodian of a museum or other collection.

That’s right, a collection you select, control and share. Videos and photos can be included, but the limit is 18, so choose wisely.

Gallery Frequently Asked Questions

Flickr provides a slew of helpful information in frequently asked questions format.

Two of the most important and I’m sure immediately asked:

Only 18?

We’ve specifically limited the number of photos or video that can be added to each gallery to18. While it might seem like an arbitrary number, we want to give our members an opportunity to engage in activity that is similar to what a curator of a gallery or museum might undertake. And 18? It seems like a fine place to start.

Even a sprawling retrospective of a genre or specific artist wouldn’t included every single piece of work available. A curator takes the time to choose a selection of artwork that together becomes something in itself.

Can I add my own photos and videos to a gallery?

In a word, no.

We’ve created galleries for members to celebrate the creativity of their fellow members. You can feature your own content in “sets”.
