Daddy Blogging

Fixing up the son's tux
Loving tech, social networking, and blogging doesn’t mean I’m not also a dad. Heck, I’ve been a dad over half my life now.  Chris Brogan started a site for men like me, Dadomatic.

Dadomatic is a place for dads that blog to blog about fatherhood and family. This can take the form of advice, product reviews, or how-to articles. Visitors to Dadomatic will find whit, wisdom, and wackiness. Best of all it’s family friendly.

I’d like to point you to my two most recent Dadomatic offerings:

Massage and your children

Love, Anger, Kids

Some of your favorite bloggers blog there as well. Jeffery Sass, Chris Brogan, and Doriano Carta aka Paisano.

Dad-o-matic on Good Morning America

Just got this great news from my cohort Paisano:

“Hey guys. Just wanted to let everyone know that it’s finally going to happen. I’ve been working on a special deal with ABC and Good Morning America producer on a new blog post that we’re going to feature exclusively on “The 5 Most Critical Legal Documents Every Dad Must Have for his Family”. Chris Cuomo will be interviewing Alexis Neely on the air on 8/26/2009 (She’s one of the most well-known family lawyers in the country) where they will talk about Dadomatic, what we do and share the link to our exclusive article. We can expect a tremendous influx of new readers and hopefully subscribers!”

This is very exciting for all concerned.  Dadomatic.com was kick started by Chris Brogan as way to get dads blogging about being dads.  The epitome of daddy blogging you might say.   Dorian aka Paisano is the editor-in-chief, while I and several other dads write about raising children, being a spouse, along with product reviews.

Exposure from this will really bring the multi-author blog into the limelight.  Now to get off my tail and start writing. I could be the next daddy blogger on Good Morning America.

Get retweet action Chris Brogan suggests

Chris Brogan is someone I trust. So when he says I can do a better job at putting up tweets that folks will retweet, I tend to believe him. Beyond that, I’m on the same page already with him on most of his suggestions.

A few ones he gives as bonus suggestions to get retweeted are:

  • Retweet other people and promote other people 15x to every 1 time of your effort.
  • Don’t tweet every damned thing you write about or do. Folks will fatigue quickly.
  • Befriend and add value to the best retweeters. It’s a live network, a human network, a give-and-take relationship.

To me, the last one is one folks think they’ve already got covered. Often though, they will see a retweet and be following the retweeter instead of the original source. Trust me, you’ll miss out that way. What folks retweet is in two camps; they retweet every stray link from their friends, or they are very picky about what they retweet.

Find original sources, follow them, and do a fair amount of retweeting of their links and such. You’ll find it brings them into your fold. If it doesn’t, no problem, you’re still sharing good stuff.

Another tip to consider on making your posts up for retweet is to link directly to things. Folks will stop clicking your links if you always link to the home page for a blog but mention a specific post. Link to that specific post.

Same thing goes for telling folks that the link you’re sharing is a video. It’s not near as important to say it’s on YouTube or Vimeo, just say it’s video. Where I work, they ding you for streaming video.

Go in peace, share good stuff, and check out Chris’s original article.

Six Pixels of Separation – Chris Brogan Review – Video

Chris Brogan reviews Six Pixels of Separation, a new book by Mitch Joel. Chris is admittedly biased and yet the review is compelling enough for me to give it a quick look.

The best clue for me I’ll enjoy it is Chris referring to it as actionable. You can read a chunk and do something with it.

Chris is someone in my circle of trust. Please enjoy the video and visit his blog, ChrisBrogan.com.

Elite Event for Bloggers – SOBCon in Chicago

IMG_5854

04.28.2009 – Chicago, IL — April 28, 2009 – The buzz on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other social media is getting louder every day, with Oprah Winfrey’s debut on Twitter last week the latest hit in the extraordinarily active online world. More than 112 million blogs are active now, spurring small and medium-size businesses as well as non-profit organizations to explore how to grab the eyes and ears of their publics on this powerful new medium. At Chicago’s SOBcon’09 May 1-3, an elite event for business bloggers and social media practitioners, there are valuable lessons to be learned from the Web’s most influential experts. The presenters are established social media stars, reaching a combined total of 8 million people weekly.

This event was a turning point in my life in Web 2.0. Not only did we talk about blogging last year, but the real meat of the event was business online. Attending this event really put me in the spirit of networking, sharing, and being a contributor online and off.

SOBCon08 brought wonderful folks into my life who I still meet regularly with. Five of us formed a SOB group. Our mentoring group provides us encouragement, feedback and connections.

Beyond that, SOBCon introduced me to other bloggers and has created lasting relationships. These relationships have turned into friendships as well as people I can trust for advice, inspiration, and learning a thing or two.

This year’s SOBCon is being attended by some of my friends and partners. Some of them will be attending for the first time. I’ll take credit for bringing several of these folks to commit to this event. It meant that much to me that I see the cost as an investment for anyone serious about blogging and business online.

Liz Strauss is the mastermind behind it. I encourage you to get to know her at Successful Blog even if you aren’t attending SOBCon.

It may sound like I’m gushing, but this event will change some lives. But it’s a winnowing exercise as well. Some attendees will find they’ve been mislead before now. They’ve been told about get rich quick systems, and how to get thousands of followers and fans. SOBCon will be a big debunking for them. A handful of folks there will drop off and give up. The rest though will be energized and enriched. They’ll form new bonds, go forward with new vigor, and join the ranks of the likes of Darren Rowse and Chris Brogan and Denise Wakeman.

To share one memory from last year, Denise just reminded me of our dinner at Ving’s. That experience is the type of bonding you don’t often get with people. And like I always say, there’s no better way to get to know someone than to break bread together.

Please visit the SOBCon site and consider it for your list of events to attend in the future. It will change the way you blog and do business online.

Oreos and Social Media – That is the question

Can you believe these?

Chris Brogan, a favorite blogger of mine, asked us a question on Twitter -

…what it would do if Oreo came knocking looking for a social media project.

It’s a great question and Chris received more than a few answers. Some of my favorites are:

  • bradatpharma – Oreo avatars. I’d have an opportunity for people to offer new flavours, I’d have a feedback loop for taste testers… hmmm…
  • mecarluen – How bout a make-your-own Oreo cartoon using GoAnimate, ey? http//goanimate.com/go/watch
  • LeisaWatkins – – An art contest – art created out of Oreo Cookies. Everyone could vote for their favorite work of art.
The Caffeinated Blog even had a response.  But the question is for me, what would I suggest.  Well here’s a few ideas.
  • Create a place for folks to share their best Oreo sharing moments – via stories, pictures, videos
  • Create a Twitter presence – use it to take feedback, stories, and share fun links
  • Create a ‘fun place’ where folks can download Oreo related goodies – include celebrity guest pictures, videos, and music
There are a ton of great ways a brand like Oreos could make a go of it in social media. As a matter of fact, they’ve already got a cool Oreos website.
Thanks Chris for sparking us into action with such a cool question.

How not to have a guest at your Tweetup

Focus on Chris Brogan

Focus on Chris Brogan

We held a Tweetup in O’Fallon Missouri.  Attendance was good.  There was a guest celebrity.  Out-of-towners showed up.  Heck, the food and the beer were even good.  But it’s a miracle it worked out so well. I totally goofed up the part about having a guest out.

Here’s how not to successfully have a guest at your Tweetup

  • Give the guest a one day notice about the Tweetup.
  • Only plan the Tweetup two days ahead of time.
  • Don’t guarantee a ride out to the Tweetup for the guest.
  • Expect the guest to find a restaurant almost 40 miles down the highway from their motel.
  • Don’t remember to treat your guest.
  • Introduce your guest as if everyone there actually knows him or her.
  • Don’t even offer the guy a beer.
  • Oh yeah, and take pictures of your guest eating. That’s always a winner.
Yeah, I hit about all of the faux pas of having some one out to my neck of the woods.  But this particular guest, Chris Brogan, seemed to deal with it quite well.
Chris, it was great having you out.  Next dinner is one me, and I’ll even spot for the beer. Oh, and yeah, no more 40 mile sojourns.
Thanks for joining the fun folks out in St. Charles County Missouri.  That was our first ever Tweetup.

Twitter Packs or Are you on the list?

So Chris Brogan has this great ideaTwitter Packs. When I first read that, I thought, Packs as in starter packs, but not exactly. What Chris did is start a wiki page with very lose organization, listing various folks on Twitter, himself included.  And then he told folks about it.  One can instantly imagine that folks took sides.  See his follow up post here.

For me, it was instant fun!  Talk about a neat idea.  Of course, the first thing one must do when checking such a list is look for themselves.  Sadly, Missouri had been forgotten, and thus me.  Tojosan has been summarily added along with a handful of other Missouri Twitterati.

Locations aren’t the only category now either.  There’s a page for topics, and a page for religious and sexual orientation. Wow.  Of course, they left off Baptist, go figure.  Fixed that!Finding the page on sexual orientation, one could argue that perhaps that was territory better left unexplored. Why? Because someone might tag you or someone else gay or straight, and it just might be wrong. Or worse yet, you might get outted and that wasn’t the plan. Yes, I was outted as a Baptist today. Don’t hate me please.

The page I found most interesting though was the company page. Company? No, not like my boring old company, but companies like Seesmic and such. Ever wanted to find out if these folks tweet or not, well there’s the place to do it at Twitter Packs.  Some of my contacts that I didn’t realize worked certain places turned up there. Cool!

So, it Twitter Packs going to survive the night? Maybe, but either way, it’s definitely interesting, and for me, I see the potential to find new friends and new partners there. How about it, are you in a Twitter Pack?
